i am from england and have moved to Paris. I have my 1991 Eunos Roadster with me and want to import it and re-register it in France. Is it possible? What do I do? To make things more difficult I speak French very badly.

Merci

:hello:

If you still have an adress in England, keep the english registration plates.

Registration of Eunos in France is very difficult, no problem for an english MX5.

Due to the lenght of the chassis number (shorter and starting by NA or NB, instead of JMZ), you'll have very complicated processes and tests to achieve if you want to register an Eunos in France.

Welcome to this beautiful, and somtimes a bit complicated, country :aie:

Hmmm, just as I suspected. Thank you for your responses.
Just another couple of questions before I totally give up on the idea:
1. Do you know if anybody has ever actually imported a Eunos before?
2. When it was registered in the UK for the first time in 1999, it was registered as a Mazda MX5. Can I not just register it as the same here?
3. If I keep it on the UK plates, is there a 'maximum stay' period I can drive it here on UK plates? There must be... does anyone know what it is? And presumably I would no be able to insure a UK registered car with a French insurance company. Or with a UK insurance company for a car that will be in France for a year.
4. As you can tell, I'm trying to do all I can to keep my Roadster, but it might be more sensible to sell. Would anyone in France be interested or am I better off going back to the UK to sell it.
5. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm pretty sure you guys will have all the answers. Thanks again.

>> yes, in my opinion on the forum it was already done but it's very long, you need to pay lot fo money for driving tests, changing belts, brear and front lights, turns, you have to fix some fog light, you have to change all glasses (to get european versions). In UK, it's the best country to plate some impossible car but in France it's one of the worst, it's a way for governemnt to protect the local market.

Ifnot, lot of french people will go to the USA to take buy some car.

2. When it was registered in the UK for the first time in 1999, it was registered as a Mazda MX5. Can I not just register it as the same here?
>> no, it's a question of european version or not. With my father we 've already bought some car from the USA and it was about 4 months (a record) to plate it and both of them are professionals (my brother is specialized is us muscle cars), so it was easier, but ifnot it will have be so expansive...

3. If I keep it on the UK plates, is there a 'maximum stay' period I can drive it here on UK plates? There must be... does anyone know what it is? And presumably I would no be able to insure a UK registered car with a French insurance company. Or with a UK insurance company for a car that will be in France for a year.
>> it's your main problem, excepting if you got your british insurance, none french company will accept to insure your car in UK plates.

4. As you can tell, I'm trying to do all I can to keep my Roadster, but it might be more sensible to sell. Would anyone in France be interested or am I better off going back to the UK to sell it.
>> i were you, i will sell it in UK because it will be some serious problem if you want to sell it in France.

5. Sorry for all the questions, but I'm pretty sure you guys will have all the answers. Thanks again

I would not say so. I know a local british sports cars reseller who is used to selling cars that are not allowed to register in France. They assured me that you can pass «controle technique» (French MOT) on an English plated car, and have a French insurance. The con is the insurance price may be higher.

However, I'm not sure an Eunos is worth the trouble. They use to do this for much more expensive cars.

Both Pevosan and Rob,
Thank you so much for your help.

I suppose I have only one option, but you've certainly saved me a lot of time to discover it! Thank you again.

I'll let you know how it all turns out, but I am determined to have an MX-5 for my time in France. These French roads would be perfect for my stupid Japanese import if only it was not a stupid Japanese import.

Kind regards

This question might seem off-topic, but do you expect to stay in France for long ?
If you don't want to sell your Eunos, it might be of interest to store it (even in France - if it's in a closed place and the wheels are removed, it doesn't need registering or insurance) and have a french MX-5 for the time of your stay.
And if you're on a budget and/or want a right-hand drive, you may also buy a "true UK MX-5" (VIN starting with JMZ) and register it in France, which many people here have already done. ;)

>> in the past yes, but nowadays, all technical control centers ask some COC (certificate of european conformity) to pass technical control. It's compulsory since the 1th of january 2011. My mother in law got insurance offices (Allianz) and she confirms that, excepting if it's some short time where you will have to bring some car or delay to plate it, that they need french papers with french plates.

In your situation Mike, reporting it's some Eunos, you cannot get this damned COC :(

Thanks for all being 'of one song' - if you had all disagreed I'd be very confused.

But now I have a plan.

I will return my Eunos to the UK to store, sell or part exchange for a Left Hand Drive MX-5 (NOT a US Miata! - an EU car), which I will bring to France (where it should be). If I can't get a suitable LHD, I'll get RHD. Sorted.

Thank you all.

As said before, your Eunos would be hard (and expensive) to get registered and insured properly in France. But UK Mx5s can be registered relatively easily... and are much much cheaper than LHD mx5s...
Easiest and cheapest for you would probably be to swap your Eunos for a british mx5 and get it registered in France.

If you still have an address in the UK you could also try these guys: http://www.stuartcollins.com/

I would also sell the Eunos, buy a RHD mx5 in UK and register it in France.
Prices are better in UK, even for a "mx5" UK specs, than LHD in France.
Welcome here !
